ICU stands for ICU is the acronym for Intensive Care Unit. It is an individual department of the hospital that offers advanced medical care and life-saving services to patients with a serious injury or disease. The units that provide intensive care care take care of patients suffering from the most severe and life-threatening injuries or ailments that require continuous and thorough supervision by a group comprising specially trained doctors and nurses. The team is specially trained for the treatment of seriously injured or sickly patients. Patients are able to be transferred in icu full form from an emergency department if it is required. It is generally done when the patient's condition is constantly declining.

There is a separate ICU for the babies who were born prematurely or with severe illness. It's called neonatal intensive treatment unit (NICU).

ICU is also known by the name of Intensive Therapy Unit or Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) or Critical Care Unit (CCU). The first ICU specialist would be Peter Safar.
