LENGTH CONVERTER
LENGTH CONVERTER
Choose the length, and then write the value you want to convert to another unit of length into the "From" field, and select the unit that you wish to convert in "To" field. The result will be displayed on the "To" field right after you click on any unit.
Length can be described as what you know is the measurementof something from end to end. It isn't easy to get exact measurements when it comes to converting miles into kilometers. Sometimes we do need an estimation of someone else's arrival, or the time to get there, and that is why a length converter can be really useful in calculations. Measurementconverter can be utilized in accordance with the circumstance and, since you can convert any type of length, it is able to help you solve your mathematical problems too. To determine how far a person is from you transform their distance into kilometersor miles and then calculate the exact date of their advent.
The foundation of the world is measurements. The first length ever discovered was around four hundred years ago which was known as an ancient measurement of length, and was referred to as Cubit. Today, everything is made around measurements and distances of our steps is measured, also known as the average speed for walking, which is around six miles per hour.
Now, not all the calculations are precise because the word "accuracy" refers to that the measurement is closest to the standard or known value. If the people of today were not aware about length conversion, they would not be aware of the typical patrol required by an engine for covering only a few kilometers. If measurements weren't a part of our lives, we wouldn't have figured out the requirements to visit space. If there weren't measurement calculators, we would not have solved all the mystery of physics.
We often utilize tools to measure various items in our lives. When you wish to make a change to your room but can't change the measurementsto that appropriate length measurement unit and come up with some estimationwhich mostly goes wrong, these tools allow us to gauge the size of the world around us. They can determine how tall we are also length measurements are not the same in all the parts of the planet, as the measurement of height is in feet, inches centimeters, meters, and MM To CM in different countries. Making use of a length converterfor this purpose is essential.
You can calculate how far two things are and convert them into your required length unit, i.e. convert inches into centimeters or convert feet into meters using our length calculator. The online length conversion tool can be used to cut down your time from manually turning the measurements into different length units. We all are aware that a kilometer is only a fraction of an inch, but we start calculating when we need to travel a coupleof hundreds of miles in order to estimate how long it will take until the trip is over, particularly when it comes to choosing the destination.
Whether you want to convert feet to meters or reverse the process, follow the following steps to find your required length:
- If you're on the Unit Converter page all you need to do is search to that length converterin the menu. Just tap it, and you will have our length conversion calculatorright in front of you. It's as in the picture below:

- It is easy to convert any unit of length to another by simply entering the desired number within the "From" section and choosing in which in that "TO" section.
Convert Lengthand Distance Units Instantly
The converter includes modern units of length. There's also a conversion for historical units of length you might want to visit for ancient, medieval and other old units which are no longer in use.
The American System (US Customary Units) and British Imperial Measures
American measures and weights are based on units used in Britain prior to 1826 which was the date when the imperial system was officially created. In the period 1960-1963, American and British length measures were distinct in 2 Parts per Million. The middle of the 20th century it started causing problems , and the governments of the two countries came to an agreement to adjust the measures to be exactly the same. Since then, Great Britain and the United States were using the exact length measurement. For the U.S. the old standard of foot was maintained with the designation US survey foot.
In 1995, the UK began using metric units in general usage. The only imperial measurements of length that can be legally used are now miles yards, feet, yards and inches for road traffic signs.
British Imperial Measure before 1963
The first English official measurement standards were defined in 15th century. British systems of measurement, commonly referred to as imperial units was established in 1824. The British Weights and Meausurements Act of 1824 repealed every existing British measures laws and redefined existing units. In 1963, the Weights and Measures Act standartized international measures.
International Nautical Measure
The international nautical mile was defined through the First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco in 1929. This is the sole definition currently in use and is also the one accepted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Before 1929 , various nations had their own definitions, including they Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States did not immediately recognize the international standard.
Meter definition
Meter (British English: metre) is the base length unit in several metrics, including those of the International System of Units (SI).
The definition of the meter was changed as technological methods for measuring progressed. Now it's defined as the length of the route traveled by light in 1/9999,792,458 of a second.
How was it defined in the past?
- First trials to create the meter definition started in 1790. In 1790, the French National Assembly decided that the length of a brand new meter should be equivalent to that of the pendulum that had an unbroken period of just one second. You can check out how precise this measure was with our pendulum calculator. Enter 2 in the pendulum's duration box, and you'll be able to calculate the pendulum length value. It's actually close to the one meters (0.993621 1 m).
- In 1973 the circumference of Earth was chosen as a neutral standard. The measurement was defined as one-ten millionth of the distance from the Equator towards the North Pole:
1 meter = 1/10,000,000 quarter meridional circumference of Earthas it stretches along the Earth's meridian through Paris - 1799-1889 from 1799 to 1889, brass, platinum and the platinum-based alloy with 10% iridium meter bar were made, and still serve as a basis having the Earth's meridian length. In the 1st General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1889 defined the meter as the distance that lies between two parallel lines in a typical bar of the latter type of alloy. This International Prototype Meter remains in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres, near Paris. The definition of meter was in use until 1960 and the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures.
- From 1960 until 1983, the meter was redefined and again to be 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the red-orange spectrum of Krypton86 under specific conditions.
- 17th Conference defined"meter" to be 1/299,792,458 in the distance light travels within a single second The measurement is still in use to this day.
The table below summarizes the history of the meter definition (by Cardarelli, 2003).
